Roving Burlesque

INTERMEDIATE/OPEN

Mondays
8:30 - 9:30PM

February 10 - March 17

Ready to take your burlesque performance to the next level? Many burlesque shows are presented in a roving setting, where no two shows are ever the same! In this course you will learn the art of burlesque roving, techniques you can use to rework your performance on the fly and the foundations an acts requires to ensure you engage your audience every time. We will focus on improvisation skills, adaptable choreography and how to captivate the room no matter where you are performing.

At the end of six weeks you will be invited to The Burlesque Studio's end of term party, where all classes are invited to perform routines for each other and participate in a class photoshoot!
*The performance and photoshoot are optional, you can also just come along for fun!

What you will learn

Your Course

1

Introduction

Welcome to Roving Burlesque Week One! Here you will meet the rest of the class. We will learn the foundations of a burlesque routine that we will use across the first few weeks of the term.

2

Audience Interaction

Stepping into Week Two we will learn how to adapt our performance based on audience reactions, and explore character techniques for captivating different audience members.

3

Improvisation

We will look at ways to create a flexible act (song, costume, story) and we will focus on our improvisational skills and techniques for when unexpected things happen during our show.

4

Perform Anywhere

So you think you can improv? This week is all about going with the flow, learning to rove to any music and perform in any scenario! We will look at how we can adjust our performances for any venue or stage layout.

5

Preperation

We will discuss all the things you need to know for roving, including keeping yourself safe, getting to and from the change room, what to expect in different backstage environments and other preparation tips and tricks!

6

Let's rove!

It's now time to combine everything we have learnt into a final roving session! We will learn burlesque choreography that we will then apply to multiple different scenarios and settings, challenging our new improv skills!

Information

WHAT TO BRING?
In later weeks, students are encouraged to bring along costume pieces they want to work with, however this is not a requirement of the course. Costume pieces and props are provided when required. Don't forget your water bottle!

WHAT TO WEAR?
Something comfortable that makes you feel cute! Leggings, bike shorts with a fitted tank top or t-shirt are great choices. You might even consider a leotard or bodysuit.

WHICH SHOES?
Classes will be taught in heels but you are welcome to dance barefoot, in sneakers, socks or jazz flats. Whatever feels comfortable for you. For heels we recommend a ballroom dance or chorus style heel, but any heel with a strap that you feel comfortable moving in will work.

DO I NEED TO HAVE EXPERIENCE?
We recommend that you have done a burlesque class or workshop ahead of this term to understand the basic foundations of burlesque dancing and performance style before taking this class. It also will help if you have seen a roving burlesque show, or two!

WILL WE PERFORM?
Our studio does not currently present showcases. You will be invited to perform with the class at the end of term class party in the studio, but it is not a requirement to participate.
